AgoraExpat : Transatlantic expertise at the service of expats
Eric Thoby is the CEO and founder of AgoraExpat : a brokerage firm specializing in health insurance for expats, with offices in Paris and New-York.
Thanks to its expertise in both American and European markets, the company stands out with its personalized support, addressing the specific needs of individuals and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.
Eric, could you introduce AgoraExpat to us ?
We are a brokerage firm specialized in health insurance for people living in a country different from their country of origin. We have offices in both Paris and New York, so a large portion of our clientele is based in North America.
Since all of us at Agora Expat are French, most of our clients are also French. However, we also serve other nationalities, including Italians, Spanish, and Europeans in general.
Who can reach out to Agoraexpat ?
We primarily focus on finding health insurance solutions for individuals. However, 20% of our business involves group insurance for companies with 10 to 50 employees.
Why did you create AgoraExpat ?
I worked in wealth management for 15 years, serving as Regional Director for North America at a French company in the United States. Back then, we handled financial and real estate investments as well as personal protection for French expatriates.
Over time, the industry evolved significantly. Financial compliance regulations between France and the United States became increasingly complex, limiting investment opportunities. In 2012, I left wealth management to shift my focus to health insurance and personal protection, leading to the creation of Agora Expat.
What do you believe is the key to your success ?
We prioritize personalized service and a close relationship with our clients. This explains why a large portion of our clientele is based in the United States.
The insurance market is complex ; comparing prices or benefits alone is not enough. It’s crucial to clearly explain the different options available, which is why it’s essential to work with experts who understand this market. I live in the United States for over 20 years, I know the market very well, and I believe this expertise sets us apart from the competition.
What are your development priorities ?
We mainly serve individuals, primarily French or European, who are relocating abroad. Now, we are working to also address the needs of “inpatriates”—people moving to Europe.
Our goal is to build a bridge between the United States and Europe, much like what we already do between France and the United States. With 600,000 Americans living on the European continent, we aim to support their transition and settlement in Europe.
